How to Listen to the Genius Loci
What needs to be consulted when you begin to conceive a master plan?

1. It includes observing the topography, plant materials already growing on the site or locally, and all natural features that are prominent—a creek, lake, marsh, pasture or views. It requires attention to the color palettes of natural materials such as types of stone, earth and plants as well as an appreciation of all the subtle sounds, smells and quality of light that create an envelope of sensations.

2. It means a strong sensitivity to the architectural style of the house and buildings already on the site, the construction materials used, and the color palette, forms and textures already there. They are the starting point for the selection of any additional building materials and colors. Anything added needs to harmonize with what is already there; but that’s not enough. New elements should intensify the spirit of the place so that it becomes even more pronounced and unmistakable.

3. Also, the character and atmosphere of the neighborhood or surrounding properties and any vernacular building styles are often as important as the architecture found on the site. The surrounding landforms, the history of the neighborhood or district, and how the property interfaces with the larger geographic area all ask to be considered.

The natural and man-made features that make up a property’s basic character provide the starting point and creative inspiration at each phase of the design process. It is possible to create a powerful genius loci on almost any property by developing a materials palette that is stimulated by the existing structure(s) and that brings the native materials of the land into play as a design element to create a coherent whole. It’s about honoring the resident spirit while creating a property with a presence.
